Being married to disgraced Josh Duggar may have some benefits for Anna Duggar when it comes to one of her famous friendships.
The Duggars and Bates families have been friends for years, and it makes sense because they have a lot in common. They both star on their own reality shows – the Duggars in 19 Kids & Counting and Counting On, and the Bates in Bringing Up Bates –, they both have 19 kids in the family, and they are both uber-religious. But, there is one big difference between the two – the Duggars have been involved in way more controversies than the Bates. So, is it possible the wholesome Bates family is now trying to distance themselves from the Duggars?
According to In Touch Weekly, fans started to suspect tension between the two families after Duggar in-law Derick Dillard went on a transphobic Twitter rant last year that resulted in TLC firing him from Counting On.

Dillard, who is married to Jill Duggar, lost a lot of followers after his hateful bullying of transgender teen Jazz Jennings, and among the followers he lost were members of the Bates family, as well as Jessa Duggar’s husband, Ben Seewald.
But, it looks like the Bates’ were just trying to distance themselves from Dillard, and they still value their friendship with the Duggars. This past week Lawson Bates posted a photo of himself at the Duggars’ Arkansas home holding Josh and Anna Duggar’s son Mason. And, Anna quickly responded to the post by commenting that it was great to have Lawson in town and Mason enjoyed hanging out with him.
The social media interaction between Lawson and Anna intrigued fans since her husband, Josh, is basically a family outcast at this point. After his 2015 molestation and cheating scandal, Josh went from a Washington D.C. lobbyist and reality star with dreams of running for office to an Arkansas used car salesman whose family won’t let him on their reality show and rarely includes him on their social media posts.
Friday we traveled 436 miles to reach Waco and had a wonderful visit at the Silos! Our kids had fun playing corn toss with dad, while mom went shopping! A group of us had an amazing lunch at Magnolia Table. After lunch was finished, Mason was ready for a nap and mom was ready for coffee (a mom’s nap in cup!). Thanks Chip & Joanna for your investment in Waco… our family made many special memories! #Waco
Still, it appears that despite the behavior of Josh Duggar and Derick Dillard, the two families are still close.
Back in March, Josiah Duggar shared a series of pics on Instagram that included himself and his fiancée Lauren Swanson, his brother Joseph Duggar and his wife Kendra Caldwell, his brother John David Duggar, and their friend Nathan Bates. And, Tori Bates also invited members of the Duggar family to her December wedding.
Season eight of Counting On premieres July 30th on TLC, and new episodes of Bringing Up Bates air Thursday nights on the UP network.
