As most fans of Angelina Jolie know, over the last decade, she has established herself as one of the leaders in political and social activism around the globe. Not only has she visited war-torn areas to learn about worldwide atrocities, but she has also worked as a guest professor at the London School Of Economics.
During an interview with Marie Claire published on Tuesday, Angelina said she has spoken with her children about sexual violence, and not just with her girls. The star wanted her children to know sexual violence affects everyone.
“I don’t speak to just my daughters,” the actress explained, “I speak to them with their brothers.” To her, it’s arguably one of the more important distinctions to make. People need to work with both boys and girls.
Despite what some people believe, boys and men are also the victims of sexual crimes in many cases. It isn’t just an act perpetrated by men against women.
Jolie believes it’s an absolute imperative for young boys to understand the importance of having a healthy relationship with girls and women. Society can’t tolerate misogynistic – or hateful behavior, in general.
Currently, the Academy Award-winner added, “sexual violence” around the world is a topic no one wants to discuss. It’s very much a “taboo subject” still, to this day. Survivors of rape and sexual assault, children born of rape, are, in some cases, treated as though it’s their fault; as if they’re the ones to blame rather than the perpetrators.
“Breaking the taboo is part of that,” Jolie added, stating that it’s a grave injustice that attackers are often unpunished for their deplorable actions. Jolie shares 6 children with her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, so this topic is important to her.
She has Vivienne, Knox, Shiloh, Zahara, Pax, and Maddox, who are 10, 12, 13, 15, and 17, respectively. Recently, while at the Fighting Stigma Through Film festival in London this November, Jolie spoke about sexual violence once again. Despite her tumultuous personal life, Angelina has managed to find meaning through activism.
As it was previously reported, Jolie and Brad split up back in 2016 after just a few years of marriage. It all started when Jolie and their oldest son got into a fight on their private jet. It was arguably one of the most surprising split-ups in Hollywood in recent memory.
