Andrew Lincoln Will Return To 'The Walking Dead' Producers Confirm
Andrew Lincoln is no longer a part of AMC's The Walking Dead , but he is not gone for good . Lincoln's character, Rick Grimes, survived his last episode, and executive producer Scott Gimple revealed that Rick will be back in action — just not like most of us expected.
Most fans thought the show was going to kill off Rick in his final episode. But producers flipped the script and had Rick survive his final moments on the series. After successfully destroying a bridge filled with walkers, Jadis saved Rick by helping him board a mystery helicopter. We have no idea where the chopper took Rick, but Gimple revealed that he will return in the near future.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Gimple announced that Lincoln will reprise his role as Rick Grimes in a series of Walking Dead films. Gimple revealed that he has been planning an exit strategy for Lincoln for the past few years.
To that end, the executive producer introduced plot elements that would help facilitate the end of Rick's journey and the start of something new.
"It is really important for the audience to know that we are going to be continuing to tell the story of Rick Grimes in these AMC Studios original films," Gimple revealed.
Gimple added that the movies are a way to continue Rick's story while moving in a different direction on the show.
Gimple emphasized that Andrew Lincoln will not be a part of the series moving forward and that fans should not expect him to appear in a future season.
The movies will center on Rick and whatever happened to him after the helicopter took him away. The films are expected to air on AMC, though an exact premiere date has not been set.
Gimple revealed that he is currently working on the first movie in the series. While he did not reveal a timeline for the project, he did promise that it will come out soon.
Along with Rick, Gimple confirmed that the movies will feature Jadis, who is also moving over to the film franchise.
The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights on AMC.
