We all know that reality tv does not mirror real life. But exactly how much of reality television is scripted is up to interpretation. To help clear things up, and remain relevant in the process, former Teen Mom cast member and Amber Portwood’s ex, Matt Baier opened up about what really happens behind the scenes of MTV’s hit show — and not all of it is real.
For starters, Baier revealed that the scenes that unfold every week are actually shot over extended periods of time. Producers heavily edit the scenes to serve their own agenda, which makes starring on a reality TV show extremely frustrating.

As an example, Baier looked at Tyler Baltierra’s recent confession that his wife, Catelynn Lowell, “repulses” him whenever a depressive episode hits.
Baier says that Baltierra would never come out and say something like that on a whim, and that producers probably talked to him for hours to get the response they wanted.
“You are seeing a small sample of what was probably a long conversation,” Baier explained.
Baier, of course, has personal experience on reality TV. He appeared on Teen Mom OG when he started dating Portwood. Baier, who is no longer a part of the show, says that he experienced a similar situation as Baltierra.
According to Radar Online, producers asked Baier the same question from different angles just to elicit a slightly different response that they could edit out of context later.
While producers work a lot of magic in the editing room, Baier revealed that the show is not scripted. He claims that producers never tell any of the reality stars what to say, though some of the conversations are redone and edited at a later date.
Matt Baier did not go into specifics about how that is done, but at least it sounds like the conversations are genuine enough.
Amber Portwood has moved on from Matt Baier and recently welcomed baby James with her new BF Andrew Glennon.
New episodes of Teen Mom OG air Monday nights on MTV.
