Alicia Vikander Is Lara Croft In The First Trailer For 'Tomb Raider'!
Video game heroine Lara Croft is coming back to the big screen with a new film and a new actress bringing her to life. Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander stars as Croft in the first trailer for 2018's brand-new Tomb Raider film.
The movie reboot of Tomb Raider is based on the 2013 video game of the same name, which was itself a reboot of the storied game franchise.
The game (and the movie) will present the origins of Lara Croft, showing how she became the hardened adventurer we've come to know.
In the trailer, we see a young Lara visiting her late father's company and learning about a secret legacy and quest he's left for her.
Lara then travels by boat to fulfill the task laid out by her father and is stranded on a remote island when the ship is destroyed by a vicious storm.
It's there that she meets up with the film's villains, led by Justified star Walton Goggins as Father Mathias Vogel, and sets out on a race against time.
The new Tomb Raider film also stars Daniel Wu as the ship's captain, Dominic West as Lara's deceased father, as well as Kristin Scott Thomas and Nick Frost.
This is, of course, not the first time that Lara Croft has been seen on the big screen; Angelina Jolie portrayed the heroine in two films during the early 2000's.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider launched in 2001 to negative reviews, though critics praised Jolie for her acting; 2003's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life was better received but failed to succeed at the box office.
Originally from Sweden, Vikander has been a rising star since winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 for the film, The Danish Girl . The new Tomb Raider will hit theaters on March 18, 2018.
