Alex Trebek passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020, at 80-years-old, much to the sadness of millions who loved and adored the longtime Jeopardy host. Now, it has been learned that the very last episode of Jeopardy with Alex as host will air on Christmas day. Alex bravely battled pancreatic cancer for a little over one year and refused to give up his fight — or his job hosting the popular game show. Alex Trebek hosted Jeopardy for 36 years, from 1986 until 2020.

Fans were heartbroken when on March 6, 2019, he announced his stage four pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Alex stated the following during his announcement.

Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. Now, normally, the prognosis for this is not very encouraging. But I’m going to fight this. And I’m going to keep working. And with the love and support of my family and friends, and with the help of your prayers also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.

Sadly, Alex Trebek passed away one year and eight months following his initial diagnosis.

Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Tony Vinciquerra released a statement about Alex's passing.

Today we lost a legend and a beloved member of the Sony Pictures family/ For 37 amazing years, Alex was that comforting voice, that moment of escape and entertainment at the end of a long, hard day for millions of people around the world. He was the heart and soul of  Jeopardy and he will be deeply missed by everyone who made him part of their lives. Our hearts go out to Jean, Matthew, Emily, and Nicky.

At this time, a replacement for Alex Trebek has not been named as Alex had not retired and was continuing to work. He filmed enough episode to air until Christmas day, December 25, 2020, and had even worked in the studios until as recently as October 29, 2020.

Alex Trebek will be sadly missed.
