Zayn Malik keeps surprising us with his confessions in his book. Not too long ago, the singer admitted that his experience being part of One Direction was not as unpleasant as he had previously stated, and now, Zayn even opened up about more sensitive issues, like his serious eating disorder. That is a very brave thing to do, especially considering that now, the singer seems to be much better.
In his autobiographical book, simply titled ‘Zayn’ the 23 year writes: “When I look back at images of myself from around November 2014, before the final tour, I can see how ill I was… Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder.”
Zayn continues his confession by explaining that he was in no way pressured to keep his weight under control during his time in One Direction. It was probably more because of his busy schedule, that the singer neglected his meals.
“It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that, I’d just go for days — sometimes two or three days straight — without eating anything at all. It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognize it for what it was.”
Furthermore, even though he stated that being part of One Direction was something he appreciates nevertheless, it looks like he blames his illness on the fact that he seemed to have no control over anything in his life at that time, and so he looked for something to have a saying in – his own nutrition.
“I didn’t feel like I had control over anything else in my life, but food was something I could control, so I did… I had lost so much weight I had become ill. The workload and the pace of life on the road put together with the pressures and strains of everything going on within the band had badly affected my eating habits.”
