A hairstyle gone wrong! One could say that Zac Efron had a bad hair day because the actor’s new style got him into trouble with people online. On Thursday, the heartthrob actor went on his Instagram account to share a photograph showing him sporting blond dreadlocks.
The 30-year-old actor wrote, “Just for fun,” in the caption. While many people online thought he looked good, a plethora of commenters accused him of cultural appropriation.
The result of the photo was a debate over whether or not he’s allowed, as a white person, to have dreadlocks, considering the hairstyle originates in Africa, a group of people supposedly subjugated in the United States. One person wrote, in all capital letters: “Cultural Appropriation isn’t for fun.”
However, others had Mr. Efron’s back: “The irony is that it’s mostly black people who are saying that it’s ok for him to have dreadlocks.”
“All of the people that are mad are just angry white folks who want something to be mad at. It’s a form of standing up for what they consider as the ‘little guy,’ but really they don’t even know the thoughts of the people they’re trying to protect.”
Another commenter pointed to the fact that there are more significant issues going on right now in the world, including poverty and war.
A person wrote, “I think Zac’s hairstyle is probably one of the least significant things out there right now. But Y’all can continue commenting about it and wasting your time. Don’t we have places to go and places to be?” Nonetheless, Efron isn’t the only person to suffer the consequences of trying out another culture’s style.
Ice-T’s wife, Coco, wore braids in her hair several times and posted photos on her Instagram. Fans online began accusing her of the same thing, but truthfully, many Instagram commenters had Coco’s back. The wife of the rapper even uploaded a few videos where she defended herself.
