Bad Boys for Life isn’t dead yet. The film was scrapped nine months ago after years of missteps, but Sony has now put the third film back on track and tagged it with a release date in 2020. Better yet, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith are expected to reprise their roles in what will be the franchise’s third offering.
The Bad Boys for Life saga started back in 2015 when Sony announced that director Joe Carnahan was set to helm the project. Unfortunately, Carnahan was never able to get the movie off the ground and Sony kept pushing back the premiere date until the director finally bowed out in the spring of 2017. Carnahan cited scheduling conflicts as the reason for his exit, though the multiple delays certainly played a part in his decision.

After Carnahan ditched the project, it seemed like Bad Boys for Life was destined to remain in development hell like so many other failed movies. According to Entertainment Weekly, even Martin Lawrence thought the movie was dead and expressed serious doubts that fans would ever get a third installment. “I don’t think we’re going to get one, not the way everything’s turning out,” Lawrence shared last summer.
Fortunately for fans, Lawrence was wrong and the wait may have been well worth it. Sony just gave Bad Boys for Life the green light and has it slated for release in January of 2020. The company has not released any plot details, but we do know that Bilall Fllah and Adil El Arbi are directing the film.
The two Belgian directors recently came out with the action flick Gangsta and helmed a couple episodes for the FX show, Snowfall. They have not revealed when production will begin for Bad Boys for Life.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to reprise their original roles in the film. The two played detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett in the original two films, which were both set in Miami. The movie comes a whopping 17 years after the Bad Boys II and 25 years after the original (assuming it stays on track for a 2020 release), which hit theaters way back in 1995.
We can only hope that the movie does not suffer any more delays and remains on schedule. The film was originally supposed to open in theaters last summer.
Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will return with Bad Boys for Life January 17, 2020.
