Season 4 of Outlander was supposed to stay in America with Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) setting up new lives for themselves in North Carolina. But Balfe recently teased that Claire will have a difficult time adjusting to her new life in the American colonies. Is it possible that the show surprises everyone and returns Jamie and Claire to Scotland in the Season 4 finale?
Season 3 ended with the time traveling couple getting washed onshore in the New World. In the books, Jamie and Claire spend a lot of time establishing themselves in North Carolina and building a home on Fraser’s ridge.
But as Balfe pointed out, Claire is coming from a time when the civil rights movement was at its peak, so adjusting to living on the frontier is not going to be easy.
“It’s very interesting to watch her wrap her mind around how to be a pioneer,” Balfe explained, adding that Claire has an immense respect “for the Native American culture.”
Balfe added that Claire will face difficulties adjusting to society in the 1700s. The actress did not go into any specifics, but she did tease that Jamie and Claire will face plenty of issues this season.

According to Express, Balfe also teased that there will be a huge cliffhanger at the end of Season 4 that nobody will see coming. Is Balfe alluding to the idea that Jamie and Claire will head back to Scotland?
We don’t know for sure what producers have planned for the series, but they have stuck pretty close to the books so far. If that holds true, then it is not likely that Jamie and Claire will head home after Season 4. That would be a huge change from Diana Gabaldon’s novels and would make adapting future books a real challenge.
More than likely, the challenge’s Balfe mentioned have something to do with this season’s main villain: Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers). After all, Heughan recently admitted that Bonnet is one of the most terrifying villains the show has featured to date, which is saying a lot.
As fans of the books already know, Bonnet does some pretty terrible things to Jamie and his family. This includes the horrific rape of Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Jamie and Claire’s daughter. We don’t know how the series will handle that scene, but we can only hope that things turn out for the better.
Season 4 of Outlander premieres Nov. 4 on Starz.
