TV lovers got some rough news on March 8th, when it was announced that major characters Dr. Arizona Robbins and Dr. April Kepner of network TV’s longstanding hit Grey’s Anatomy would be exiting the show after the 14th season. They are two incredibly popular characters on the show with huge fanbases and as a result, social media erupted in a fit full of anguish, speculation, and uproar.
Jessica Capshaw, who plays Dr. Robbins and Sarah Drew, who plays Dr. Kepner, have been on the longstanding series for 10 and 9 seasons respectively. As is the case when any beloved character takes an exit from a show, emotions immediately ran high.
However, something unique is happening in this case as many fans are speculating reasons behind the decision to let go of these actresses outside of creative changes.
Some seem to think that Ellen Pompeo, who plays the title character of Dr. Meredith Grey, getting bumped up to a $20 million salary this year has something to do with it.

Some fans have even had harsh words for creator and Shondaland pioneer Shonda Rhimes.
Allegedly, both Capshaw and Drew expressed some concern regarding lack of screen time. Grey’s Anatomy has always been an ensemble cast with many different characters.
Sources say that money wasn’t the reason the two actresses are being let go but simply that their characters stories have run their course in 9 and 10 seasons.
So despite speculation, money wasn’t the issue. It seems a bit crass and wildly assuming that it would be. Especially considering this show and its history of major character exits.
There has never been any shortage of characters who have been either killed off or written out of the storyline. In 14 seasons, numerous main characters have been eliminated, Grey’s husband and heartthrob, Dr. Derek Shepard, is one of the most recent.

So to proport that this has anything to do with the actress who plays the title character getting more money or the creator’s lack of vision seems absurd.
Both Capshaw and Drew expressed genuine, heartfelt feelings of gratitude towards the fans, their characters, and Rhimes when they took to social media after the news had been publically announced.
