It hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for the “Pokerface” singer. As fans of the songstress know, she just wrapped up A Star Is Born, alongside Mr. Bradley Cooper – who is dating the former Victoria Secret model, Irina Shayk.
In their new collaborative effort, Lady Gaga portrays an insecure artist who meets Jackson Maine, a famous musician slated to help her with her career in the music industry.
This movie is the very first film on Cooper’s belt for directorial duties. And when Lady Gaga was promoting the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, she explained something surprising about her past, something which probably not a lot of her fans knew.
When the star spoke with reporters from Variety, she described herself as being eerily similar to the main character, because when she was “bullied in school, I felt ugly, and my only escape was music and that’s what I started to sing and write songs and act.”
While it’s hard for many people to imagine, Gaga said that she only had music to turn to to help her escape “from all of that pain,” she continually endured.
As for Cooper, who admits to struggling with substance abuse issues in the past, the creation of the main character which he portrayed was very raw and emotional for him.
According to Mr. Cooper, when an actor is trying to tell the truth through their art, they have to use the things that have happened to them. And for him, that is where the beauty lies: the ability to turn negativity into positivity.
When he was in graduate school, the actor explained, his “teacher said all the insecurities, all the dark stuff, you get to use that.” While he may have had a dark past, these days, Bradley’s career and life are trucking along, as he just welcomed a child with his girlfriend, Irina, and directed A Star Is Born, moving comfortably into the director’s chair.
