Val Kilmer came under fire on the 8th of June, for expressing his unpopular opinions on the death of celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain. Val referred to Anthony’s choice to commit suicide as “selfish,” which sparked a wave of condemnation from some of his followers.
The Top Gun alum wrote on his social media account, “Oh the darkness. Oh, the dark thick pain of loss. The selfishness,” in reference to Anthony taking his life this morning.
Val wrote a series of controversial opinions, saying that Anthony was loved by so many, “from every corner of the world,” but he was “so selfish,” and has given everyone a reason “to be angry.”
The Batman Forever star went on to say that a spiritual guide once told him that suicide was the “most selfish act a human can execute.” Val rhetorically asked, “did you relapse?” and “did you suffocate?”
Val compared his struggle with throat cancer to Bourdain’s struggle with mental illness. The actor insinuated that his battle with cancer was far worse than what Anthony was going through.
He asked if Anthony would’ve killed himself had he been unable to eat food like Val was once unable to do.

As it was previously reported, a fellow employee at CNN found Anthony dead in his Paris hotel room earlier in the morning. Anthony’s suicide, along with that of Kate Spade of Kate Spade New York, renewed the conversation on mental health and suicide in North America.
And while most opinions are welcome, those from Val Kilmer, the insensitive kind, were received less positively.
Most fans and followers of Val slammed him for his comments. Users accused him of ignorance and insensitivity, considering he has no idea what Anthony was even going through.
In response to some of the criticism, Val continued on in the same vein, using words like “love,” and saying that people just misunderstood what he was saying. “You I am sorry to say, I didn’t read what I wrote very carefully,” the actor remarked.
