As we reported earlier, Meryl Streep gave a rather controversial acceptance speech after being honored at the Golden Globes for a lifetime of notable work in the film industry. She used her acceptance speech as an opportunity to take a dig at the President-elect Donald trump. However, what was surprising was that she also took a shot at MMA in the process.
As you might remember, the legendary actress, ripped Donald Trumps immigration plans, stating that we would have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts, which she said are not an art. While everybody applauded at the Golden Globes, some people outside of the film industry took exception to her comments.
The President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dana White, said that the “uppity 80-year-old” was completely wrong for taking a dig at the sport. He went further, calling her comments uneducated. The UFC head honcho said that he doesn’t expect an 80-year-old to watch MMA, though it is a global sport. However, if she didn’t like it she should just change the channel. He stated that he’s not a fan of golf, but he would never tell people not to watch it.
On the topic of whether MMA is an art or not, he said that it absolutely is an art. He said that only the elite make it into the UFC, and these athletes train all their lives to be the best in the world. Dana also talked about the diversity of the MMA. He stated that the UFC has fighters from all over the world – world champions, men and women. He also stated that the UFC organizes fights in various places around the world.
Meryl Streep was trying to make a very important point, but she should have done her homework.
