On the 29th of July, Sunday, Tyler Baltierra, the Teen Mom star, revealed what it was like to fight against bipolar disorder: an intense mood disorder characterized by episodes of mania and depression.
The 26-year-old revealed his diagnosis in April, and many of his fans, thankfully, were nothing but supportive. One person wrote on his Instagram at the time, “I’m actually so glad you’re doing well despite the diagnosis. I have the same illness, and I’m just working through it one day at a time. You give me inspiration.”
The Teen Mom OG star said that having the disease was like “dancing on the edge of a cliff.” According to Baltierra, his episodes of Mania are like an “endless euphoric adrenaline” but the bad moods are an abrupt and severe crash which take a long time to recover from.
However, even though he officially has the condition, he doesn’t want to create an identity that revolves around it. He said, “I am not my diagnosis,” and that he is “in control of his state.”
If you’ve been following his social media, Baltierra cried in a video message back in February while he talked about his state of mind. Catelyn Lowell, at the time, was also in treatment for her own mental health struggles.
Tyler said, “sometimes you just don’t even really know what to say to your children.” The reality star, in the same video, said that day was just one of those days where he’s in the middle of a crushing mood.
During an episode of Dr. Phil, Lowell and Baltierra spoke about their illnesses, and Lowell said to her husband that it has nothing to do with her. It’s just a mood he gets in.
And the National Institute Of Mental Health identifies bipolar disorder with four different types, all of which explain clear changes in mood, energy, cognitive abilities, and energy levels. Many other celebrities have a similar condition, including the late Kurt Cobain, who killed himself in 1994.
Tyler is just one of many to talk about mental health issues, with Mariah Carey, also revealing that she was bipolar as well. Kanye West, too, was diagnosed when he was 39.
