It looks like even Twitter was a bit confused with the transfer of powers and what that really meant. After Donald Trump was sworn into office on January 20, the social media platform mistakenly transferred thousands of Barack Obama followers to Donald Trump’s account.
As we all know, the new President is an avid fan of Twitter and he is always on it. His frequent and often aggressive use of social media was a key characteristic of his campaign.
Obama supporters are not really fans of Trump’s Twitter rants and so it was a shock when they discovered they were suddenly following Trump. The error happened because until the Presidential power was transferred, Barack Obama was the official owner of the @POTUS account.
One tweet posted from the President Trump ✔ @POTUS account read:
“I am honored to serve you, the great American People, as your 45th President of the United States! pic.twitter.com/BVtt7lSrlA”
Quickly, the confused followers reacted:
“I woke up this morning and realized that I’m suddenly following Donald Trump on twitter? These @POTUS tweets aren’t worth reading. Blocked,” said one user.
Barack Obama was switched to a new handle @POTUS44 account, which is where his followers should have gone.
However because of a glitch they found themselves still following the @POTUS account which had been transferred to Mr. Trump. This happened to about 14 million people.
“While Trump is generally awful, the handover of the Twitter acct had been planned: @potus44 for history, @BarackObama for future,” tweeted one user.
“ #Unfollow While it is ok for @POTUS account to move to @POTUS44 and/or @BarackObama it’s unnacceptable for @Twitter to make me follow #Trump.”
The Obama followers that were forced to follow Trump were pretty upset about the situation and they turned to Twitter to voice their complaints.
According to Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s chief executive the glitch affected around 500,000 people.
“This was a mistake, it wasn’t right, we own it, and we apologize. No excuses,” Dorsey apologized.
