According to Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, he stands alone in the crowded late-night space, as a man of color, and as a man who works with other people of color. In an interview with The Wrap, Noah said, “we’re the only late-night show with a host of color.”
Trevor, who hails from South Africa, claimed his production is the only one with an “international voice” which speaks to political issues. Noah’s time on The Daily Show comes at a period where late-night comedy is going through structural changes.
Previously, his show was hosted by Jon Stewart, and others had front-runners such as David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Jay Leno. Jimmy Kimmel joined the group back in 2003.
However, a lot of things have changed since then. Ever since Noah took a hold of The Daily Show, Leno and Letterman moved off of the air. However, Letterman has his own production on Netflix.
Samantha Bee, John Oliver, James Corden, and Stephen Colbert, have all joined the space of late-night comedy, as the area is increasingly becoming more popular for those who wish to get their news from comedians rather than journalists.
And next year, Showtime is entering the space as well with former Viceland hosts, Desus Nice, and The Kid Mero. Trevor won’t be the only one to work late-night comedy as a person of color, so it’s something he can’t claim a monopoly on for forever.
According to Noah, the other hosts are all doing something different, which can be compared to the different variations in cars. For example, there are SUV’s, entry-level cars, sedans, and so on and so forth. Each one has its own way of doing things, and different qualities to offer.
At first, Trevor’s The Daily Show was doing the greatest but has since become very popular, especially with the 18-49 demographic. However, he hasn’t won an Emmy Award yet, something he’s looking forward to acquiring.
Jon Stewart’s show, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, won an Emmy every single year from 2003 until 2012. According to Noah, his show is currently a part of the movement where comedians “dissect the news.”
