The rapper’s new album is out but not without controversy. After days of criticism, Travis Scott is finally addressing the backlash received for his Astroworld cover art!
As fans may be aware, Kylie Jenner’s baby daddy and photographer David LaChapelle took to social media to share two different versions of the image covering the album.
In the shot shared by LaChapelle, transgender model Amanda Lepore was featured while in the one posted by Travis, she was not.
The photographer made sure to address the outrage pretty quickly, claiming that she was not edited out because of transphobia.
‘Amanda was taken out because she just upstaged everyone,’ he commented.
He also assured another follower that it had ‘nothing to do’ with transphobia.
‘Everybody wants to explain everything with some phobia or whatever,’ he complained in response to yet another fan suggesting that was the reason Amanda could no longer be seen in the final version of the cover art.
Even Amanda was vocal while Scott did not comment on the scandal.
The model was very sweet about it and stated that she had a lot of fun posing for the ‘incredible photograph.’
Despite not being sure herself why she had been edited out, Amanda joked: ‘A girl can’t help it. Too distracting for the eyes. Upstaged everyone in the photograph. Oh well…love and kisses.’
To be clear, those Xs and Os were directed at LaChapelle and Travis, so it seems like there are definitely no hard feelings.
Finally, today, Scott broke his silence on the controversy.
He posted the original picture that featured Amanda, writing: ‘ASTROWORLD IS ABOUT LOVE AND EXPRESSION NOT HATE! This is very important for me to speak up about: Growing up I’ve been taught to accept everyone, not to cast people away but bring them into your home! I have nothing but respect for the LGBTQ community. I want to use my voice to make it clear that everyone on this planet is as equal and f–king awesome to the next.’
The rapper then addressed the model writing: ‘Yo, Amanda, you did upstage everyone—even me.’
‘I can’t wait for everyone to see the booklet that me and Dave put together that includes all these images. Thank you for being a part of it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.’
He ended his open letter by thanking everyone and sending love as well as welcoming anyone to Astroworld.
So it sounds like we’ll get to see more of Amanda in the booklet, just not on the cover, and that everything was a huge misunderstanding.
