Ike and Tina Turner were one of the biggest pop duos in the 1960’s but behind their infamous chemistry lie a terrible relationship. According to People Magazine, Turner left her husband in 1976 when she had just a Mobil card and only thirty-six cents in her pocket.
Her relationship with Ike was the subject of the 1993 biopic, What’s Love Got To Do With It. During an appearance on The Johnathan Ross show which will air this Saturday on ITV, the singer opened up about her time with Ike.
Tina stated she had to leave Ike with almost nothing in her pocket and had to learn to make it by herself. According to the starlet, Ike was dangerous and violent as well as on drugs at times, so she had to leave. The singer was nearly in poverty without a place to call home.
Turner left her husband in Dallas, Texas when they were staying at the Statler Hilton Hotel. She said she “took a chance” and walked straight out through the door.
The singer said when she left, she had to cross the highway at nighttime and there was a truck coming which was barely visible.
Tina said, ” I didn’t measure the speed of a car. I was running across the freeway, and this big truck was coming, and it beeped its horn.”
After Tina was almost hit, she said to herself, “I won’t try that again.” Despite the risk taken, Tina explained there is no looking back.
“It was constantly abusive, ” and there was neither control or freedom. Life isn’t worth living if you have to live in fear.
As for why Tina chose to stay with him for so long, Turner explained she promised him she would never leave because Ike said it was immensely difficult to create a career for the both of them. However, it began to be so violent Tina had no choice but to leave him in the end.
