Tim Gunn, the guiding mentor of “Project Runway,” is hammering the fashion industry due to a couple of problems he has noticed throughout the years. It is important to note that Gunn has years of experience in this field and certainly is credible when it comes to giving advice and information.
The issue Gunn can be summed up in this quote “When I’m working in the real world with real women and we’re shopping, we find that fashion seems to end when you get any larger than a size 12, (…) How ridiculous is that?”
Gunn does seem to raise a valid point. If you go to any of the mainstream companies for clothing fashion does seem to end around size 12.
Instead of fashion, it seems to be more so just clothes for the sake of something to wear. It is not fair to the average woman who might wear a size bigger than 12. She should be able to find an outfit that makes her happy, makes her feel sexy and comfortable.
He followed up by saying, “And frankly, there are two markets: The women who are larger than the 12, and then there are women who are petite, and most designers that I talk to have absolutely no interest in addressing either of those populations, which I find repugnant.”
It is nice to see someone come out and speak about this issue. Because he is credible we might get a chance to see some actual progress in the fashion industry. Not many people have the courage to come out and speak against the big names.
Only time will tell whether or not progress is made, but you can bet that we have to praise Gunn, cross our fingers, and hope for the best.
