Tiger Woods expects people to ‘respect’ Donald Trump, but it looks like that stance may have lost him some respect as well. The golf champion got slammed on social media by many after defending his president ‘friend.’
At the end of The North Trust tournament, one ESPN reporter asked the sportsman: ‘At times, especially 2018, I think a lot of people, especially immigrants are threatened by [President Donald Trump, 72] and his policy — what do you say to people who find it interesting that you have a friendly relationship with him?’
Woods responded: ‘Well, he’s the President of the United States. You have to respect the office. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office.’
But after all the outrageous things the current president has been saying and doing ever since he was elected, most citizens are not too fond of being told to respect him just because he’s the commander in chief.
That being said, many flooded social media to slam Tiger Woods and explain to him just why his way of thinking is wrong.
‘Contrast Tiger’s obviously political response with LeBron [James‘s] courageous stances. LeBron is a real man,’ one user tweeted.
He even lost some fans, one writing: ‘Have been a Tiger Woods fan since day one. He just lost me, when he said I should respect trump, and the office he is desecrating. What a joke. I don’t respect liars. Thieves, molesters, or racists! Now and forever you can keep quiet.’
But that’s not all! Some even attacked Woods’ own controversial past, saying: ‘Incorrect, Tiger. Perhaps as another cheating husband, you can sympathize, but there is nothing good about ‘valuing an office’ blindly.’
‘Tiger, when the actual ‘person’ in office begins to show ‘respect’ and dignity for the ‘office’ then perhaps we can agree. Right now the President himself lacks all respect for Americans, by his boorish and cavalier behavior, demeaning the institution of the presidency itself,’ a user explained.
Tiger Woods and Donald Trump have known each other for years and often play golf together. But if there are situations where defending your friends is not the way to go, this is one of those!
