Frankie Loyal was thrilled when learned that he was cast for a part in Kurt Sutter’s upcoming show, Mayans MC, but it wasn’t the first time he’s dipped a toe in Sutter’s motorcycle universe. Loyal originally auditioned for a role on Sons of Anarchy and was very disappointed when he didn’t land the part.
Loyal opened up about his past Sons of Anarchy experience during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The Mayans MC actor admitted that he auditioned for a part in Sutter’s original show but did not get the supporting role. Fortunately, going through the entire process helped Loyal land his new part on Mayans MC. In fact, once Loyal heard that Sutter was casting for the spin-off, he set a goal to be a part of it – but his dreams were almost foiled by his own agent.

Loyal’s agent failed to get him an audition with Wendy O’Brian, the casting agent for Mayans MC. So Loyal fired his agent and rode to O’Brian’s office himself. According to Comic Book, Loyal arrived at the office riding a motorcycle and carrying some wine and flowers. He chatted briefly with O’Brien about the spin-off, and she eventually lined up an audition.
“That was intense,” Loyal explained at Comic-Con, adding that he couldn’t believe it when he found out that he got the role. “Super grateful, like a lot of the guys, to be here.”
Loyal is set to play the part of Hank “El Tranq” Loza on Mayans MC. The character is the Sergeant At Arms for the gang. Beyond that, we do not know what kind of a role Loyal will play in the spin-off, but being a ranking officer in the club is a pretty big deal.
As a reference, his equivalent on Sons of Anarchy was Kim Coates’ Tig Trager, who was an important part in the original show and the club’s Sergeant At Arms for the first few seasons.
Mayans MC resides in the same world Sutter created for Sons of Anarchy. The spin-off, however, takes place after Jax Teller’s (Charlie Hunnam) death. The show centers on the journey of Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (J.D. Pardo), a prospect in the club looking to establish a new outlaw identity. So far, the only returning cast member from Sons is Emilio Rivera, who is reprising his role as Marcus Alvarez.
Fans can watch Loyal and the rest of the cast in action when Mayans MC premieres on Sept. 4 on FX.
