Toby and Kate’s relationship on the first season of NBC’s hit drama This Is Us was a quick rollercoaster of emotion that ended with an engagement. However, in Season 2, the couple are slowing things down instead of saying “I do” right away.
Chris Sullivan (Toby) says now is the time for the popular on-screen couple to start getting real with each other.
“They’re trying to figure out what the next steps are. They’re getting down to brass tacks. They’re getting around all of the superficial flirting and infatuation and getting real and getting honest — and facing a lot of the things that scare them,” Sullivan told Entertainment Weekly.
Chrissy Metz (Kate) added that things can get hard when people move in together; and for Toby and Kate, they are putting different things first. In season two, Kate will be focusing on herself and try to start a singing career, while Toby is putting Kate first.
Metz says that the differences between the two will lead to some tough times for the couple, but they still love and support one another.
When asked if fans were going to see a wedding this season, Sullivan replied that planning a wedding is difficult and he wasn’t sure they could put that together in just eighteen episodes, so viewers will just have to wait and see if it happens.
Despite getting engaged and moving in together, it is not likely that things will be easy for the couple when it comes to moving their relationship forward. Metz reveals that twists are coming that she did not expect.
The second season premieres on September 26th on NBC with an episode titled A Father’s Advice, and in addition to the Toby and Kate romance, other storylines will unfold.
Will Randall (Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown) and his wife adopt a baby? What will happen with Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) now that Jack has moved out? And, the biggest question on everyone’s mind: How and when does Jack die?
Because of the time jumping element to the show, there are things the audience knows will happen, but not how and when.
Jack’s death is the biggest mystery, and show creator Dan Fogelman says we will get our questions answered later in the season.
