Ever since The Walking Dead debuted its Season 9 trailer at San Diego Comic Con, fans have been coming up with theories to explain what went down in the clip. While we’ll have to wait to see if any of the theories pan out, showrunner Angela Kang recently confirmed that one fan theory is on the right track – and it has something to do with that mysterious “A” that has been popping up.
The trailer updated fans on where the show left off in Season 8 and confirmed that the story will pick up after a two year time jump. The clip featured shots of all four communities – Alexandria, the Sanctuary, Oceanside, and the Hilltop – and showed how they have progressed over the past two years.
There was a lot to unpack in the trailer, but one thing that stuck out was the scene with Jadis and the helicopter, which was shown hovering in the background. The chopper is presumably the same one Jadis encountered last season and attempted to contact.
According to Screen Rant, Kang clarified what was going on in the scene with Jadis and offered some hints about what’s ahead next season. Kang did not go into too many specifics, but she did reveal that the symbol painted on the chopper (three rings and the letter “A”) has some kind of significance to the story.
“Yes, there is a meaning to both things,” Kang said in reference to the rings and letter “A.” “No, I won’t spoil it right now!”
As fans will recall, we first saw the interlocking rings when Jadis was introduced at the Heaps. The rings were painted on her applesauce lid and she has been in search of their true meaning ever since. As far as the letter “A” is concerned, it first appeared back in the Season 4 finale.
The letter was drawn on the car that Rick and his group were captured in when they visited Terminus. We have no idea how the letter and the rings are linked, but Kang assured fans that everything will tie together in the coming season.
While we wait to see how the theory pans out, Season 9 will see the end of two of the show’s most important characters: Maggie and Rick. Producers have not revealed how Rick will die, but it will definitely be heartbreaking to finally see him go.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead premieres Oct. 7 on AMC.
