The Walking Dead has been a ratings juggernaut on AMC for years now, while its spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, is still struggling to find an audience. While both shows take place within the same shared universe, they’re separated by thousands of miles and several years of story. That’s made it seemingly impossible for the two shows to have any real crossover between them — until now.
At New York Comic Con this past weekend, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman made the surprise announcement that crossover event is indeed coming.
Unfortunately, as exciting as this development is, Kirkman was very vague on when and how this crossover will go down.
“There is one character that is going to go from one show, that I will not name, to another show, that I will not name,” said Kirkman from the NYCC stage.
Kirkman did confirm the crossover will happen within the next year, though, and called it a “huge event” for both of the shows.
The big question now is which character will be the one to make the jump from one show to the other, and of course, which show will the character show up on first?
Fear the Walking Dead takes place several years before the current seasons of The Walking Dead, so it’s possible a later version of a Fear the Walking Dead character could end up appearing on The Walking Dead.
Conversely, an earlier version of a Walking Dead character could show up on Fear the Walking Dead; there are several characters whose backstories have yet to be explored.
The most likely option (and least desirable from an audience perspective) would be to create a whole new character and move him or her from one show to the other. The third season of Fear the Walking Dead concludes next Sunday, with The Walking Dead returning for its eighth season on October 22.
