The first head-to-head matchup of the season between The Voice and American Idol took place this week, and the ABC reboot was no match for the popular NBC singing competition. American Idol lost eleven percent of its share from the Sunday premiere, and that’s a huge concern because the premiere’s ratings were the worst in franchise history. Is Katy Perry’s American Idol already a train wreck and worse than anyone could have predicted?
Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and The Voice managed a 7.5 rating with a 12 share, while Perry, Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and AI scored a 5.6 rating with a 9 share. In the TV ratings world, The Voice crushed its competition.
On top of the low numbers, Idol is also dealing with Perry who is not coming across as a popular judge.
Those that did watch the first two nights noticed Perry approach the show’s contestant search with a boy-crazy attitude, as she constantly flirted with the male contestants. She even kissed one on the first night and threw him off his game when he went for a kiss on the cheek, and she went for a full-on smooch.
On the second night, Perry revealed that she was looking for a boyfriend, and when 27-year-old contestant Trevor Holmes walked into the room, she couldn’t help but fawn over him. Holmes said that he did have a crush on the singer, but he was happily in a relationship.
But, that didn’t keep Perry from letting Holmes know how hot she thought he was, adding that all guys named Trevor are hot.
Perry also danced with a contestant but fell on the floor and experienced her own wardrobe malfunction.
Fans had a mixed reaction on social media, with some saying that Perry went too far with her flirting. But others praised her and said that she made the show interesting.
Perry has also been making headlines for another reason – she is locked in an ongoing property battle with a group of nuns. The singer wants to purchase an 8-acre piece of land that once belonged to a convent for the nuns until the archdiocese evicted them.
The nuns didn’t want to sell the property, but they didn’t have the right to make a real estate deal, the archdiocese did. So, the court sided with Perry. However, a lawsuit continues in the matter, but Perry has not commented on the situation.
New episodes of The Voice air Monday nights on NBC, while American Idol regularly airs Sunday nights on ABC.
