According to reports, Michael Jackson no longer holds the number spot for the best selling album of all time. The Eagles surpassed Jackson’s Thriller with their greatest hits collection.
The RIAA, the Recording Industry Association Of America, explained to the Associated Press that their record, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has reached platinum status 38 times.
In other words, they’ve sold approximately 38 million copies in total, including streams and traditional album sales. The Eagles record, released in 1976, pushed Thriller to second place which has been certified 33-times platinum.
Additionally, Hotel California, The Eagles album issued in 1976, is 26-times platinum, making it the third best-selling record of all time. The last time RIAA counted the number was in 2006, and at that time, it had sold 29 million records.
Don Henley, in a statement released, stated he and the rest of the band are grateful for their management, crew, the radio, and their fans. “It’s been quite a ride,” the singer-songwriter added.

Previously, before the advent of streaming technology, the RIAA only counted traditional record sales, but ever since 2013 they’ve begun counting streams from YouTube, Spotify, and other streaming services.
As for how they go about counting the numbers, 1,500 streams of an album equal “one album sale” and 10 song downloads equal “1 album sale”. Interestingly, the band has managed to last through the ages, which includes the revolution of audio format from LP-records, CD’s, then mp3’s, followed by streams.
The Eagles came to prominence in the 1970’s in Los Angeles and released a number of huge hits that have continued to stay relevant.
They dissolved in 1980 but reunited fourteen years later. In 1998, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Despite Drake’s recent record-breaking effort, Scorpio, he has a long way to go before he even comes close to surpassing The Eagles.
As it was previously reported, Scorpio, was streamed over a billion times within one week of its release, surpassing Post-Malone’s beerbongs and Bentleys, which came out shortly before.
