It wouldn’t be a season of The Bachelor without some surprising twists and turns, but the one coming from Arie Luyendyk may win hands down. Reality Steve revealed weeks ago that Becca Rufkin will win season 22 of The Bachelor, and he seems to be right. But now a twist of epic proportions has occurred after Luyendyk gave Rufkin the final rose.
Just two months after Luyendyk got engaged to the 27-year-old account executive from Minnesota, he has called it off and is now dating runner-up, Lauren Burnham.
So how did this happen? Luyendyk apparently started calling Burnham – a 25-year-old saleswoman from Dallas – on January 1st, the night of the season premiere.
He told her that he had been having second thoughts about breaking up with her at the final rose ceremony in Peru.
Luyendyk and Burnham continued to talk while his relationship with Rufkin was falling apart, and then the former race car driver pulled the masterful, yet unexpected switch.
Last week, a number of television vans were parked outside of Burnham’s mom’s house in Virginia, and it is because Luyendyk ended his engagement with Rufkin and has started dating Burnham, which is why he was at her parents’ place.
Luyendyk has repeatedly said in interviews that he fell in love with two women during the season, and it seems that statement was more foreshadowing than it was a marketing ploy.
The sudden post-show switch may remind fans of Jason Mesnick when he got engaged back in 2009 to Melissa Rycroft. But, during the After the Final Rose special, he revealed that the engagement was off, but he was still interested in pursuing a relationship with the runner-up, Molly Malaney.
That stunt made Mesnick the most hated man in America, but, in his defense, he and Malaney are now happily married with children.
It is doubtful that Luyendyk will follow down the same path as Mesnick. His track record isn’t the greatest, and his reputation doesn’t come close to Mesnick’s. It’s hard to visualize Luyendyk and Burnham’s relationship lasting the year, much less forever.
We are still over a month away from the end of the season, and it will be interesting to see what producers and the media say about the spoilers.
But, fans should be ready for the March 5th finale and the After the Final Rose special, because it will surely be a wild night. Watch Arie on The Bachelor, Monday nights on ABC.
