Sad news for the fans. Legendary actor John Mahoney has sadly passed away on February 4 at the age of 77. The man is best known for playing the father on the show ‘Frasier.’
According to his publicist, the star died while in hospice care in Chicago.
We are yet to learn more details about his passing.
Mahoney, who was born in England, received a bachelor’s degree from Illinois’ Quincy College but not before he served three years in the United States Army and became a US citizen.
The British actor was the one who gave life to the hilarious character of Martin Crane, Frasier and Niles’ father for no less than 11 seasons.
Mahoney even won a SAG award for his role back in 2000, was nominated for two Emmys in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category and a for a couple of Golden Globes in the Best Supporting Actor in a Series category.
Aside from his highly acclaimed role on Frasier, Mahoney won a Tony back in 1986 for best-featured actor in a play.
It was for John Guare’s The House of Blue Leaves.
Movies that he starred in during his three-decades-long career include: Eight Men Out, Tin Men, Say Anything, Moonstruck, American President and Barton Fink.
Mahoney’s most recent role was in 2015 on the British drama Foyle’s War.
Another relatively recent and recurring role was on Hot in Cleveland where he played Betty White’s love interest from 2011 to 2014.
As if all of those productions were not enough to prove that he was a jack of all trades and a very talented man, Mahoney was also a voice actor, being featured in animated films such as The Iron Giant, Antz and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
