Solo: A Star Wars Story had an impressive opening weekend in the United States over the last three days but its numbers fall short in comparison to the other installments of the Star Wars series. According to a statement from Disney, the movie pulled in around $101 million. So, it did well, but not as well as the previous films.
Moreover, the film’s budget was $250 million, therefore it hasn’t made its money back yet. But industry executives are optimistic it will continue to make bank over the course of the next month.
Fans of the Star Wars films know that the preceding films crushed it at the box office, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which currently holds the record for the highest-grossing opening weekend of all time. The movie even surpassed James Cameron’s classic, Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
Reportedly, Solo made another $65 million overseas, making the total, $148.3 million thus far. The last movie, The Last Jedi, generated $220 million in its opening weekend.
SOLO✨ — Have you seen it yet? I will probably watch Solo next weekend and many people seem to like it so that makes me exited for it. I don't care about spoilers but for the sake of others please don't comment any!😊 ⠀ Tags [ #starwars #solo #solomovie #astarwarsstory #thelastjedi #leiaorgana #princessleia #carriefisher #lukeskywalker #markhamill #hansolo #aldenehrenreich #kyloren #bensolo #adamdriver #woodyharrelson #rey #daisyridley #qira #emiliaclarke #marvelwarsgrp #kylosforcegrp #ohstarwarsscenes ]
As for its reception among the critics, several notable movie connoisseurs have claimed it was still a lot of fun, as well as simple, but it doesn’t have the same “epicness” of its predecessors. And while it didn’t beat out the box office records of the former installments, it did introduce a never-before-seen character trait in one of its characters.
The screenwriter for the film claimed Donald Glover’s character was a “pansexual” person, someone who is attracted to human beings regardless of their gender identity or expression. And its leading actor, Alden Ehrenreich, has undoubtedly created a massive career for himself seemingly overnight.
Despite its under-performing track record, Alden Ehrenreich confirmed in an interview previously that he already signed on to play Han in the upcoming sequels.
According to multiple reports, two more installments to the series are in the works. However, their release date hasn’t been established by Disney yet.
