Once upon a time, fans had to wait years between Star Wars films; since Disney took over the franchise, we’ve been blessed with a new film every year, though. Now, things are about to get even crazier — even though Star Wars: The Last Jedi just debuted last month, a new Star Wars film is about to hit theaters in just four months! Today, Lucasfilm gave us a sneak peek by releasing the official synopsis for Solo: A Star Wars Story.
We’ve known for a while that the movie would explore the origins of the scruffy smuggler (now played by Alden Ehrenreich), but now we have more details on what the story will entail.
The new plot description is still pretty vague but does reveal the movie will show how the Wookiee Chewbacca first encountered Han Solo:
“Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.”
Actor Peter Mayhew played Solo’s partner Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy (plus a cameo in the prequel Revenge of the Sith).
In 2015’s The Force Awakens, the ailing Mayhew shared the role with Joonas Suotamo, who took over the role in The Last Jedi and will return for Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Actor/comedian/rapper Donald Glover will play the Millenium Falcon’s original owner, Lando Calrissian, a role originally played by Billy Dee Williams in the original Star Wars trilogy.
Solo has had a troubled production history, with original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller fired in the middle of filming.
Acclaimed filmmaker Ron Howard quickly came aboard to complete production on the film, which will debut in theaters on May 25, 2018.
