Nicolle Wallace, an MSNBC anchor, was the subject of targeted social media criticism following her comments regarding Melania and Ivanka Trump. On Thursday, Wallace referred to both women as “paid off,” and asked if they were “dead inside.”
On Nicolle’s show, Deadline: White House, Wallace asked how women close to Donald could deal with the fact that he’s continually going through allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, assault, in addition to allegedly cheating on his wife, Melania.
Nicolle referenced Donald Trump’s involvement with Stormy Daniels, whom he allegedly had an affair with over a decade ago. Trump has vehemently denied the allegations.
Nicolle rhetorically asked on her show if they’re “the most stoic human beings,” or are they just “numb,” “dead inside,” or “paid off?” She concluded her diatribe with one last question: “what’s their deal?”
Following her comments, social media came out in support of both Ivanka and Melania, claiming that Nicolle went over the line. Britt McHenry, a political commentator, said to Fox News that “feminists and liberal women often champion women’s rights” unless they disagree politically.
McHenry said, “Ivanka and Melania can’t win with the media.”
One social media commentator said that Wallace “needed help,” and that her remarks were very “dark.” According to McHenry, Americans look at the comments coming from Wallace as “petty and inconsequential.”
The political commentator added that it’s becoming increasingly easy for people to feel isolated and withdrawn from politics, because the polarization is getting worse, with each side using “unnecessarily salacious and cruel tactics.”
At the beginning of the week, Donald Trump sent out a tweet regarding Melania’s absence from the public’s eye. Trump revealed that, contrary to speculation, the FLOTUS has been recovering from surgery. The president said political pundits and journalists have explained her absence with everything from plastic surgery, serious illness, and marital problems.
