According to media reports Friday an upcoming episode of Urban Myths featuring Joseph Fiennes as the late Michael Jackson will not air.
The controversial episode was canceled following backlash from Jackson’s family including his daughter Paris.
The episode “Elizabeth, Michael & Marlon,” told the “alleged” story about a road trip the late king of pop took with close friends Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor following the September attacks on 11, 2001.
When the first trailer was released last week, people were outraged that a white actor was playing the African American artist.
Jackson’s daughter, Paris, posted on social media how offended she was and how the casting decision almost made her “vomit.”
Jackson said the show showed a lack of respect for her father. “They worked through blood sweat and tears for ages to create such profound and remarkable legacies,” she tweeted.
She called, what she saw in the trailer, a “shameful portrayal.”
Following the backlash, Sky Arts network announced on Friday that they had decided to not air the episode.
Joseph Fiennes himself was astonished at being retained for the role. “It was a shock, I thought someone was wrong,” he explained to People in early 2016. I use my imagination to think, and I do not think we should Have rules when talking about imagination. If it promotes a stereotype, then it’s wrong. But I thought this project did not do it. ”
Apparently, Paris Jackson lacks imagination.
What do you think of the idea of a white actor playing an African-American? Is it offensive?
