Body image and positivity are huge hurdles for so many women. Regardless of celebrity or industry, many women in our society struggle with loving their bodies. Shay Mitchell, best known for her eight-year stint as Emily Fields on massively popular teen drama Pretty Little Liars, says she’s just like every other girl out there.
Mitchell told Shape magazine, which she covers for the March issue, that she struggles to get to the gym sometimes, that she often battles her own insecurities and that she loves food. She’s a big fan of pizza.
Due to the unnecessary and harsh standards of beauty women have been sold for eons, it’s easy to believe this is her reality, along with so many other women in our world.
Mitchell reveals that she has been dealing with her insecurities for a long time by focusing on her strengths instead of her weaknesses. She reveals it isn’t always easy but a shift in mindset has helped.
When she thinks about exercise, she likes to frame it as something she does to get stronger. She never engages in it or thinks about it in terms of weight.
In fact, the beauty says she’s never even weighed herself because she doesn’t “trust” the scale. An interesting outlook to have that could definitely benefit many women who feel chained to and defined by the number on a scale.
Mitchell also has a strict policy against makeup at the gym, she wants to experience the process of really strengthening her body and testing its limits in her “rawest form” so despite how made up she gets for red carpets and photo shoots, no makeup is allowed in the gym.
One thing she refuses to do is stress out about her diet and what she consumes. A self-professed foodie, she has a serious love for pizza and all things savory.
If she eats an entire pizza she doesn’t beat herself up about it. She makes sure she is active or works out the next day.
Having a healthy balance of enjoyment, glamour, indulgence and hard work seems to be paying off for this beauty.
