After months of treatment and an elevated tumor test, former Beverly Hills 90210 actress Shannen Doherty will soon undergo surgery following the happy news that her breast cancer is now in remission. The actress shared a photo of herself and her doctor this past week on Instagram and told fans that she would soon be going under the knife.
My doctor had me bank some blood for my upcoming surgery. Mars P was patient with me and didn’t even roll his eyes at my anxiety over the needle size. He was patient, kind and really good. As I sat there banking blood for myself, I asked him about some of the people also donating… especially the ones with TVs. So two of them come every 2 weeks and donate platelets which takes 2 hours. Another girl comes as often as allowed to donate blood. To say I’m moved by the generosity of people is an understatement. I’m vowing that as long as I’m cleared in the future, I will start donating. Thank you to those selfless humans that donate. Thank you to Mars and all at the clinic in Woodland Hills for your smiles and hard work. Thank you to the @americanredcross #humbledagain.
The 47-year-old did not give any details about what the procedure was for or why it was necessary, but she did thank people who take the time to donate blood and help give patients like her a second chance at life.

Doherty also thanked the clinic in Woodland Hills for their hard work, as well as the American Red Cross.
The actress told fans last year that her cancer had gone into remission after countless hours of treatment, but last month she revealed that one of her tumor tests came back elevated and would require further assistance. Doherty says that she is remaining positive and stressed that she is still in remission.
She says that the elevated test result has prompted her to take stock of her life and it helps put things in perspective. It also reminds her of what she has learned during her cancer journey. Doherty admits that sometimes she needs a refresher and cancer changes your life in ways you can’t imagine.
Many things can cause an elevated test result, and Doherty still refers to herself as a “cancer slayer.”
Went to doctor today for tumor marker test and bone density scan. Yes, that’s my mom… I figured why not. She got bone test done as well. I adore my doctor and all the great people who work there. But not going to lie, there is always anxiety waiting for test results to come back. Reoccurrences happen. And I can’t imagine how it must feel to beat back cancer only to have it return again. For now, I stay positive, stay healthy and do what I can to help promote research so that cancer can be beaten once and for all. I’ll keep you posted on my results. Btw… my mom is great! @su2c #theangelesclinic
It has been a year since she announced her remission, but even at that time, she was realistic about the chances of her cancer coming back. She said that the next five years would be crucial and re-occurrences happen all the time. The news of remission definitely made her heart lighter, but she still had to wait.
Last August, Doherty revealed that she had returned to work and was filming her new Paramount Network series Heathers, which will premiere this year. She said that the last two years have been tough during her cancer fight because as an actor, “people bench you.”
Shannen Doherty says they assume you are too weak and not able, but for her, it is work that invigorates her and renews her strength to conquer “the unimaginable beast.”
