It looks like Serena Williams’ already iconic black bodysuit she wore at the French Open this year has started a lot of controversy. As fans of the tennis champion may know, The Associated Press reported last Friday that president of the French Tennis Federation, Bernard Giudicelli has decided the garment ‘will no longer be accepted. Everyone must respect the game and the place.’
The man said this during an interview with Tennis Magazine and added that from now on, there is going to be a dress code implement as ‘I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far.’
But there is no surprise that Giudicelli’s statement got him a lot of backlash due to the fact that the form-fitting bodysuit was not just for style.
It was actually designed with the role of helping blood circulation and therefore avoiding clots, something Serena has been dealing with for a year before the Roland-Garros press conference.
In the end, it also made a statement considering it was what she wore during her very first victory after welcoming baby girl Olympia.
‘It feels like this suit represents all the women that have been through a lot mentally, physically, with their body to come back and have confidence and to believe in themselves,’ Serena said.
‘I’m always living in this fantasy world. I always wanted to be a superhero, and it is kind of my way of being a superhero,’ she added, referring to the fact that the bodysuit looks like straight out of Black Panther.
That being said, her fans have been slamming Giudicelli’s statement, but Serena’s response was very polite.
‘Obviously, the grand slams have a right to do what they want to do, but I feel like if and when or if they know that some things are for health reasons then there’s no way that they wouldn’t be OK with it, so I think it’ll be just fine.’
The tennis player went on to praise Giudicelli, saying: ‘The president of the French Federation, he has been really amazing and he has been so easy to talk to. My whole team is basically French, so yeah, we have a wonderful relationship. So yeah, I am sure we’d come to an understanding, and everything will be OK, and yeah, so it would not be a big deal. He is a really great guy.’
Finally, she reassured her loyal supporters that ‘everything is Okay.’
