Most of the time, weddings do not go all according to plan no matter how carefully everything is organized beforehand. That seems to be the case with Serena Williams’ ceremony as well.
In her brand new documentary, Being Serena, the sportswoman explained why her longtime coach Richard Williams, who just so happens to also be her dad did not walk her down the aisle.
Furthermore, he apparently decided only an hour before the wedding that he would no longer fulfill the traditional father role.
In the documentary, via Vogue, Serena explained what happened: ‘He was in New Orleans, he had a suit, and I know he was really excited. But then, he texted me and said: Serena, I do not want you to be mad at me, but I just cannot walk you down the aisle. I am not myself anymore. I am just too nervous.’
The tennis champion did not panic, nor did she get all angry but instead, she respected and supported his decision.
‘Daddy, it’s okay, if you do not want to come to the wedding at all, that is okay too. I am not going to be upset with you about it, so I do not want you to be upset about it,’ she recalled saying.
Williams was well away other brides would not have reacted like she did but knowing his health struggles in recent years, she was understanding.
‘If he does not want to be up there in front of many people, I completely understand. When we first came on the scene, there were many who did not get him. I do not think a lot of them wanted to get him. I do not think a lot of them could’ve anyway.’
‘Our family really knows what we have. We just want for each other to be happy. That is what actually matters. I do not think anything could ever change that,’ Serena declared.
