Breaking records must run in the family. Athletic superstar Serena Williams covers February’s issue of Vogue alongside her 4-month-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. The pictures were snapped when the baby was only 3 months old, which makes her the youngest person ever to be featured on the cover of the magazine. As the baby is named after her father, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Williams has taken to calling her daughter by her middle name, Olympia.
In the interview, Williams opens up about motherhood, her harrowing birth story, and the place that tennis and her career now have in her life. Olympia was born via an emergency C-section when her heart rate dropped dangerously low during the process of labor. A day after, Williams began experiencing symptoms that were familiar to her and after explaining her history of blood clots was given the proper medication that wasn’t initially administered to her.
At three months old, @olympiaohanian is our youngest cover star to date. "I’m so glad I had a daughter," says @serenawilliams. "I want to teach her that there are no limits." Williams has been frank about just how taxing and difficult motherhood can be. She attributes much of her ups and downs to the crazy hormonal changes which she says constantly makes her emotions go haywire. She’s very open about her questions and uncertainty and struggles on social media. She recently lamented the prospect of having to stop breastfeeding and how horrible teething is.
Williams does also think that retiring and being a mother does sound promising but she’s not quite done with her tennis reign, she says she wants to win at least two more Grand Slam titles which would bring her total to 25.
She reveals how perspective shifting having a baby has been because she gets to come home to such a beautiful baby all the time which supersedes what tennis gave her. She says now that she has her daughter, she doesn’t need titles and money. They may be fun and great but they aren’t necessary the way they used to be to her before she became a mother.
This puts into perspective her choosing to withdraw from the Austrailian Open citing that she needed a bit more time before she came back full swing after the birth of Olympia.
