Sony Pictures is gearing up to begin filming Venom, the first of several planned spinoffs from the Spider-Man franchise. Tom Hardy was announced months ago in the lead role of Eddie Brock, aka Venom, but almost nothing else is known about the film’s other characters or plot. Some new casting and story details have come to light this week, though nothing is yet confirmed.
Actor and filmmaker Scott Haze is set to join the new movie when filming begins next week, though details on his role are being kept under wraps.
In addition to Hardy and Haze, the only other confirmed cast members are Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and comedian Jenny Slate.
Williams is rumored to be playing Brock’s ex-wife, Anne Weying, but that too has yet to be confirmed by the studio or producers.
Venom’s longtime comic book nemesis, Carnage, is said to be the film’s villain, but Sony is denying that Haze will be playing the role.
Meanwhile, some clever fans on the internet have begun to piece together potential details on the film’s storyline, based on the little data we have available.
It appears the film will take its inspiration from the six-issue 1993 comic book series Venom: Lethal Predator, which was the character’s first time headlining his own book.
In that book’s story, Spider-Man and Venom come to a truce with the condition that Venom stays out of trouble; in order to avoid running into each other, Venom leaves New York and takes up residence in San Francisco.
Unfortunately, the father of one of Venom’s previous victims follows him, seeking revenge by hiring a team of five super-powered mercenaries to take Venom down.
Rumors have long suggested the film will be filming at least partly in San Francisco, and new casting calls are seeking actors to play mercenaries. Filming for Venom begins October 23, with a planned release date of October 5, 2018.
