The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a powerhouse at the box office for 10 years now, with multiple heroes appearing in their own films and teaming up for the massive Avengers tentpole movies. There are two heroes in the Avengers who haven’t headlined their own films yet though: Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye. Now, one of them may finally be getting their chance.
Marvel Studios has hired screenwriter Jac Schaeffer to pen a script for a new standalone film starring Johansson’s Black Widow.
Now, it’s important to note that the potential Black Widow film is very early in its development and hasn’t even been greenlit as of yet.
It appears that Marvel has brought in Schaeffer to put together a script and is waiting to see what she produces before deciding whether to move forward.
Schaeffer, an up-and-coming writer, was among several screenwriters under consideration before being chosen by Marvel president Kevin Feige.
Johansson herself was also brought in to discuss her own ambitions for the character and what she’d like to see in a standalone film.
Fans have been clamoring for Black Widow to star in her own film ever since the character first appeared back in 2010’s Iron Man 2.
The lack of such a film has also been considered something of a missed opportunity since Marvel has yet to release a superhero film with a female lead.
Rival studio DC ended up beating Marvel to the punch with their successful 2016 film, Wonder Woman, which won rave reviews.
To its credit, Marvel does now have a female-led movie in the works: 2019’s Captain Marvel, starring Oscar-winner Brie Larson.
Another major question mark surrounding a Black Widow movie concerns the state of the MCU itself. The upcoming two-part Avengers films (filmed back-to-back) are said to be the end of the MCU as we know it, so who knows what kind of universe Black Widow may inhabit when and if she returns to the big screen.
