Sabrina Claudio, a 21-year-old pop and R&B singer from the state of Florida, is facing a huge backlash for alleged offensive messages she posted on social media about black women before becoming famous. In a surprising twist, her music is very popular with that demography.
According to reports, Claudio, who is half-Cuban and half-Puerto Rican, used to run a Twitter account, @ODamnYourUgly. Via this page, the poster made a lot of derogatory comments about dark-skinned people not being attractive.
Claudio did admit that she used to be the account owner and at some point even said that she missed her old days as an Internet troll. After the story went viral, Claudio reportedly rushed to delete the old tweets.
However, there are two problems with this move, the screencaps exist, and her critics are demanding a real apology. Claudio might not have the choice some former supporters are already saying that they will no longer listen to her music.
One of those old fans wrote: “African American women deserve all the recognition in the world. It is disgusting and shameful that they are being put down when the world would not be where it is today without them. I am just so fucking disappointed that you would basically spit on the names of these beautiful women, some who supported you and made your career possible. It is straight up disrespectful. shake my damn head.”
A second commenter continued with: “I cannot believe there are kids out there who still continue to support a person even after they found out how bad they are. She is literally racist. Selena literally supports a rapist. Jake and Logan paul. How do people even have the audacity to still like them?”
A third person stated: “We are very much still oppressed, but that’s a whole diff topic, I suggest you read about systematic racism to start off. And we supported her, that’s why we are upset, but we don’t need her, she needs us, we’re just telling her about herself.”
Claudio launched her career in 2016 and released her debut album About Time in October 2017. The rising music star recently collaborated with on a song called “All to You / “Don’t Let Me Down.”
