Ryan Gosling is one of the latest in a slew of celebrities speaking out about shamed and predatory producer Harvey Weinstein. After several women have come forward to accuse the titan Hollywood producer of horrible acts stemming from lewd comments all the way to allegations of rape, Hollywood heavy hitters have had a lot to say.
Even powerhouse actresses Gweneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie released statements claiming they had been the victim of unwanted advances by Weinstein when they had just started out in the business.
All of the media coverage surrounding this story seems to grow exponentially as additional people speak out.
Gosling made it known that he felt strongly about lending his voice of support to the women who spoke out about what the Oscar-winning producer had done to them.
In a statement that he posted on Twitter, Gosling used unequivocal and strong language to denounce the producer’s actions but to also bring light to the fact that this problem doesn’t happen in a bubble. It’s undoubtedly widespread and men have a responsibility to stand up for women who are subjected to such heinous actions.
“I’m deeply disappointed in myself for being so oblivious to these devastating experiences of sexual harassment and abuse. He is emblematic of a systemic problem. Men should stand with women and work together until there is real accountability and change,” Gosling wrote in the public statement.
His approach brings necessary light to the fact that there is a lot that power, wealth, and prestige will hide a person from.
Some are under the false notion that celebrity and status automatically mean someone doesn’t have to be held to account for their wrongdoings. This is not true. Talent and influence don’t absolve anyone of consequence.
But many of the Hollywood elite are coming to terms with the fact that this isn’t something that just happened once. Weinstein is one man but he had a career that spanned two decades.
These atrocities are only coming to a head right now. Imagine all the instances of abuses of power and sexual assaults that have taken place by others in similar positions.
According to Gosling, it’s a problem that must be properly dealt with expeditiously.
