Robert Redford putting an end to his long Hollywood career is worrying friends and family who fear that the actor might be dying.
According to an insider, he is “fading fast” and has lost interest in performing after 56 years, saying he’s “tired” of the profession.
The famous actor is part of two last films — Our Souls at Night and Old Man and the Gun.
After the filming for these two movies is over, “I’m going to say, ‘OK, that’s goodbye to all that,’” says the 80 year old actor.
“There’s a great line by T.S. Eliot: ‘There’s only the trying. The rest is not our business,’” he added wisely.
Even though a representative denied the actor is retiring, Redford himself said: “Sometimes you have to change the guard, and that includes me.”
As a star he was forced to keep his grievances and suffering to himself for so many years.
“There have been so many hits on our family that no one knows about. And I don’t want them to.”
Despite his successful career, Redford had many tragedies in his life. When he was only 19 years old, his mother died. The actor remembers her being by his bedside, patiently nursing him back to health when he contracted polio at the age of 10.
Although Redford secured a baseball scholarship he soon lost it “because of drunkenness” caused by his lack of ability to cope with his mom’s passing.
After only one year since marrying Lola Van Wagenen, in 1958, tragedy struck again when their baby boy died of sudden infant death syndrome.
“It was very traumatic and hard to deal with because it was so unexpected. As a parent, you tend to blame yourself. That creates a scar that probably never heals.”
His daughter, Shauna was also on the brink of death, being involved into an automobile accident in 1983. Before that, just a few months prior, Shauna’s boyfriend, Sid Wells, was shot and killed by his roommate.
In 1985, his 27-year marriage to Lola came to an end. She was his lifeline for decades and their divorce left him guilty and devastated.
Three years ago, Redford lost 60 percent of hearing in his left ear while filming All Is Lost due to splashing of cold water during the shoot.
“People think it’s been easy for me. It’s so untrue,” said the beloved actor, truthfully.
