Real Housewives of New York City star LuAnn de Lesseps sat down for her first interview after checking out of rehab for the second time, and she revealed that she relapsed because of the lawsuit her children and ex-husband filed against her. But now, de Lesseps says she is 30 days sober, she feels good, and she has a whole new life.
During an appearance on the Today Show with Megyn Kelly earlier this week, de Lesseps explained why she checked herself into rehab last month for the second time this year. The Countess explained that when the news broke that her children, Victoria and Noel, and her ex-husband Count Alexandre de Lesseps sued her over selling her $8 million home, she felt betrayed and hurt.
According to People Magazine, there was a stipulation in de Lesseps’ divorce settlement that she was to create a trust for the “benefit of her two children,” and attempting to sell her house breached that stipulation.
De Lesseps says she wanted to change her life and move to upstate New York. She says that she found a beautiful home, and it made sense to move because she wanted more privacy and a fresh start. However, her kids were not happy with the decision because she was selling their home in the Hamptons. So, her ex-husband ended up blocking the sale and sued her.
The 53-year-old says that she now understands why her ex did it, but at first, she was devastated because she had her heart set on the house she had found upstate. And, she didn’t find out about the lawsuit until she saw it in the press.
So, that night the reality star said she “fell off the wagon” when her girlfriend told her that she loved to make watermelon martinis. De Lesseps recalled saying that she was “in” because she used to drink those at Bungalow and she loved them.
De Lesseps ended up drinking “two or three” of the martinis, but she didn’t stop there. She also downed two bottles of rosé and a six-pack of beer. She ended up dancing in her kitchen while wearing a bikini and Panama hat because she doesn’t “know when to stop.”
“I can’t be like most normal people and have a glass or two of wine,” de Lesseps said. “I’ll drink the whole bottle. … It just doesn’t work for me. I’m not wired that way.”
The reality star said that after that incident she decided to check back into rehab and left three weeks later with a new life. Now, she goes to AA meetings and she takes her treatment very seriously. She says she loves going to meetings and she has a new way of supporting herself.
LuAnn de Lesseps realizes now that she can’t drink socially, and at this point, she feels almost allergic to alcohol.
The season finale of Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesday night on Bravo.
