Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel is not happy with her ex-husband Jason Hoppy or his legal team. Hoppy’s defense lawyer Robert Wallack alleged in court last week that the recent death of Frankel’s on-again, off-again boyfriend Dennis Shields “raises serious concerns about Ms. Frankel’s parental judgment.” It’s no secret that this custody battle has been a nasty one, but Hoppy and his attorney just took things to another level.
Frankel feels this new legal strategy from Hoppy’s lawyers is simply manipulation of Shields’ unexpected passing.
“Bethenny is sickened by Jason’s latest claims in court, it’s a low blow, even by his standards, to try and use Dennis’ death to his advantage,” says an insider. “Bethenny thinks it just shows Jason’s true colors though, how manipulative he is, and how he will stop at nothing to lash out at her.”

Shields died on the morning of August 10th after a suspected drug overdose. Frankel attended his funeral last week and is still mourning the loss of her close friend. The source says that she finds this move by Hoppy disturbing and disgraceful, but at this stage, she shouldn’t be surprised that he would pull a stunt like this.
Hoppy and Frankel divorced in 2016 and share custody of their 8-year-old daughter Bryn. However, Frankel has recently asked for full custody since he is facing charges of stalking her.
Wallack told Manhattan Supreme Court judge Michael Katz that Shields spent a lot of time with Bryn, and sometimes took care of her when the Skinnygirl mogul wasn’t around. He then asked the court what it says about Frankel’s parenting since she would allow an addict to care for her daughter. Wallack concluded that it wasn’t just a lapse in judgment, but it was “downright dangerous parenting.”
Hoppy’s lawyers also requested that Frankel undergo a drug test and suggested that she may have her own substance abuse problems. The lawyer referenced the “Holidazed and Confused” episode of RHONY that aired in May where Frankel appeared to be intoxicated. He said that the reality star was running around naked and passed out after mixing Ambien and alcohol.
But Judge Katz could sense how vicious Wallack was getting and said, “now you’re throwing grenades across the table.” Meanwhile, Frankel sat in the courtroom just a few feet away from Hoppy, and her eyes welled up with tears during Wallack’s accusations.
Shields allegedly told the first responders who arrived at his apartment in Trump Tower that he had taken his prescribed oxycodone along with Vicodin and a sleeping pill in an attempt to ease his back pain that he had been suffering from after an injury. He also asked his assistant to give him Narcan, which is an emergency opiate antidote. However, he lost consciousness and paramedics were not able to revive him.
