It appears that the ladies of Monterrey are easing back into the latest bit of mystery and drama in their lives if a recent snapshot of filming has anything to do with it. After much hoopla and speculation, film legend Meryl Streep was snagged to take her talents to the small screen in a role in breakout HBO hit Big Little Lies.
Meryl Streep plays the mother of Alexander Skarasgard’s character, Perry Wright.
Given how the first season of the show ended, Streep’s character, Mary Louise Wright, may be a bit of an adversary for the ladies.
In a picture taken during filming in Los Angeles, California, Reese Witherspoon who plays Madeline Martha MacKenzie can be seen ready to hurl an ice cream cone at the back of Streep.
While there isn’t much context for the shot, other than Madeline’s eldest daughter Abigail looking on as her mother throws the frozen dessert at the older woman, it seems they’re likely not huge fans of one another throughout the second season.
The mother of Perry Wright has shown up after the events that took place as the first season was coming to a close.
She is there to visit her grandchildren, twin boys, who are mothered by Celeste, played by Nicole Kidman.
Madeline’s allegiance to both Celeste and Jane makes this ice cream throwing scene fit the unfolding narrative of the story.
Thankfully though, all the drama is in front of the camera.
Behind the camera, Streep is loving working with a predominately female crew. With female director Andrea Arnold and both Witherspoon and Kidman producing, the multiple Oscar winner and nominee feels right at home.
She loves working for women because “they understand.” Streep adds that the cast and crew have “lots of big, fabulous, drunken meals together.”
