It’s hard to believe that seventeen years have passed since Elle Woods went to Harvard Law to chase a man – and then her dreams. But now, it is time to bend and snap once again because Legally Blonde 3 is happening. Star Reese Witherspoon has confirmed the much-anticipated movie is in the works, and she did so in the most Elle Woods way possible.
In an Instagram post that has the internet buzzing, the 42-year-old put on her famous pink sequin bikini that she wore for her Harvard Law application in the popular 2001 film and laid back on a blue pool floatie that drifted across the screen. She added the caption, “It’s true.”
As People Magazine points out, many fans will remember that Witherspoon celebrated the 15th anniversary of the first film back in 2016 by trying on Elle’s costumes and reenacting the most iconic scenes. And, getting those costumes wasn’t hard because she held onto them after shooting the movie and kept them in storage.
Witherspoon showed off the outfits on Snapchat – including the dress Elle wore on her date with Warner and the pink Playboy bunny Halloween costume – and she recited famous lines that many fans still live by (“Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed”).
Legally Blonde was the story of California sorority girl Elle who decided to follow her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law after he breaks her heart. In addition to Witherspoon, it also starred Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, Ali Larter, and Victor Garber.
The 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde focused on Elle in her life after Harvard when she made the move to Washington D.C. to pursue a career in politics. It also starred Sally Field and Regina King.
Witherspoon has not revealed any plot points of the third movie and has made zero announcements when it comes to returning cast members, but it will have a new producer. Witherspoon will be producing the movie through her company, Hello Sunshine. And, the writers of the original, Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, will return.
The actress is a pro when it comes to social media, so her savvy announcement of the new Legally Blonde film shouldn’t be a surprise. Fans have seen Witherspoon promote her latest project, share the perfect beach shot, and send out the ultimate Mother’s Day greeting. But, she also uses the platform to fact-check stories about herself.
Earlier this week, she found a story in Variety that claimed one of her Nashville homes was for sale. But, she didn’t list anything, and the pictures were not of her house.
So, Reese Witherspoon took a screenshot of the story and let the media outlet know that they had made a mistake. She let them down nicely, writing “This house is so pretty, but it’s not mine!!”
