Thanks to the recent wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it seems like everything British Royalty is on fans’ minds. It is hard not to compare the newest royal couple with the first of our generation – Prince William and Kate Middleton – and wonder how the future King knew that Kate was “the one.”
The story of William and Kate’s romance started before they studied art history at St. Andrews together. Royal biographer Katie Nicholl says that the two actually met through mutual friends before going to college, and that sparked the rumor that she decided to attend the university with the intentions of locking down the prince.
Regardless of her reasons to attend the school, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a class schedule and became good friends, but it took a while before things took a romantic turn. It wasn’t until Middleton modeled in a school fashion show that William had thoughts of Kate possibly being his future queen.

They went public with their relationship in June 2005 while on a ski trip together, but they hit a snag in 2007 and called it quits for a few months.
“We were both very young … and we were both defining ourselves as such and being different characters, it was very much trying to find our way, and we were growing up, it was just a bit of space, things like that and things worked out for the better,” explained Prince William in the couple’s official engagement interview.
But according to Elite Daily, by the summer of 2010 they had done some growing up, and things between them were serious. William and Kate moved in together in a farmhouse in Wales, and it became clear to everyone that they were heading to the altar. By November of that year they ended the suspense, and the couple announced their engagement.
In the official interview, William also revealed that there was something special about Kate when he first met her, and he knew there was something there he wanted to explore. Starting out as friends was a good foundation, and he says that over the years things continued to get better and it was easy to be around each other.
It may not be the most romantic story, but the couple just recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary and welcomed baby number three, so we can assume that the couple is happy with their life choices so far.
Kate recently wrote in a letter supporting children’s hospice care that spending quality time with her family is important for her as a mother, and it is the simple moments like playing together outside that she cherishes.
