Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip surprised royal watchers this week by missing Prince Louis’ christening, but insiders say that it wasn’t because of health issues. Instead, it is the Queen’s busy schedule that kept her away from the event, but her absence was a mutual decision between the monarch, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.
The Queen had a busy week last week in Sandringham, Norfolk, and she has another one ahead of her. She will be at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Royal Air Force that includes a flyby from various aircraft over Buckingham Palace. And, she will be hosting President Donald Trump this Friday at Windsor Castle.
According to People, the 92-year-old missed her great grandson’s christening, but those in attendance included Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Middleton’s family – her parents Michael and Carole, and siblings Pippa and James.
The event took place at The Chapel Royal, St. James Palace in London, and even though the Queen missed the service, everyone was “comfortable with the arrangement” said an insider. Afterward, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted a tea party at Clarence House and served a portion of their wedding cake that they had saved since 2011. They also served part of the cake at Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s christenings.
Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, conducted the service, and he said that he was “delighted and privileged” to christen the newest prince.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also announced their youngest son’s godparents a few hours before the service. They included friends and family members of the couple, but no siblings.
Louis’ godmothers are Lady Laura Meade, Hannah Carter, and Lucy Middleton.
At his christening, Prince Louis wore a handmade replica of the Royal Christening Robe, made by Angela Kelly, Dressmaker to The Queen – the original Royal Christening Robe, of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was made in 1841 for the christening of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, Princess Royal 📷PA
Meade is the wife of James Meade, who is the godfather of Princess Charlotte, and the couple has joined Prince William and Kate Middleton this summer in Norfolk and Gloucestershire. Carter is a college friend of Kate’s, and she and her husband Robert live in the county of Norfolk near Anmer Hall, William and Kate’s country home. Lucy Middleton is Kate’s cousin and the sister of Adam Middleton, who is one of Princess Charlotte’s godparents.
Nicholas Van Cutsem, Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, and Guy Pelly are Prince Louis’ godfathers. Van Cutsem is one of four brothers who have been close to William and Harry since they were little. Fletcher is also a close friend of William’s, and the two went to both prep school and Eton College together. Pelly is a longtime friend of both William and Kate, and he was the one who planned William’s bachelor party.
Kate Middleton and Prince William left Prince Louis at home to attend the 100th birthday of the Royal Air Force Tuesday morning.
