Michel Jackson’s son, Prince is opening up to the public about growing up the son of such an influential figure. He spoke for Los Angeles Times and gave fans an insight into his childhood.
The 19 year old aspiring filmmaker said it wasn’t until later in life that he realized his childhood was not exactly ordinary.
“I don’t think I ever thought about if other kids lived like that when I was younger. But once I knew who he was, I realized it wasn’t normal. I remember being in Disneyland and I went to the window and there were all these fans waving and taking pictures of me. I thought it was normal, so I just waved back. It wasn’t until I saw a video of him performing and people were fainting and passing out, when I realized the work he did meant a lot to people.” He said about his father.
Prince also shared the reason why his legendary father put all of his children in masks, as to not expose them too much to the famous life and be forced to always live in his shadow.
“My dad spoke to me like an adult. He told us the reason for the masks was he wanted us to have our own life without him.”
He went on by adding other pieces of advice that Michael gave young Prince, one of them being to be careful of whom he trusted.
“It sounds bad, but … a lot of people are motivated by themselves. He said don’t trust someone just because it sounds like a good idea — do your research. There are a lot of people who want to interact with [me and my siblings] just because of who we are.”
Prince was only 12 years old when Michael Jackson died and he was all of a sudden bombarded with rumors of his father’s sexual child abuse. For Prince the allegations were completely untrue, calling them extortion attempts: “After he died, we got bombarded with [everything]. It was a shock. It all came at once. But [we] learned how to deal with it by just kind of ignoring it.”
